Volvo Ocean Race leg 3 start

This is just a little clip I shot on a point and shoot as we said goodbye to the Volvo Ocean Race fleet off the coast of Abu Dhabi at sunset on the eve of the Leg 3 106 nautical mile sprint to Sharjah in the UAE.
It was an awesome sunset over the Arabian Gulf.
Flew with Matt filming and our great pilot Mike from Falcon Aviation Services a great bunch of guys and they do tours around the city if you are ever in Abu Dhabi.

The Volvo Ocean Race has appointed two photographers with a wealth of sailing experience and know-how to cover the 2011-12 edition, starting in Alicante in October.
New Zealander Paul Todd is a former professional sailor with over 20 years in the photographic industry. Paul served as picture manager during the 2005-06 edition of the race and has worked for several Volvo Ocean Race teams.“I grew up on boats and have been sailing all my life. When you grow up with a sport you have a passion for it, a feel for it,” Todd said. “When I’m shooting I can see why the crew are doing what they’re doing and anticipate what’s going to happen next. That can lead to great shots – pictures that a non-sailor maybe wouldn’t get.”Todd has also covered five America’s Cups, shooting for commercial clients, and most recently was the official photographer for the WSTA/Louis Vuitton Trophy. He has published several books dedicated to race photography in Europe and North America. He currently lives in Alicante.Ian Roman, one of the UK’s leading marine photographers, used to race dinghies and swapped a job in finance in the City of London for a life shooting international regattas. He covered the 32nd America’s Cup and during the latter stages of the race took on the role of official photographer for Britain’s TEAMORIGIN.In 2008 he started working for the AUDI MedCup as official photographer, a position he has held ever since. Georgia Aquarium

Recently I had a chance to visit the Georgia Aquarium and test out my new Nikon D3s in a lot of places where there was extremely low light. The camera has a new sigma 50mm F1.4 on it and did a fantastic job. I am very pleased with the combination of the two. If you are in Atlanta and you get a chance to visit it is well worth making the time for this experience to see Whale sharks, Manta rays, Hammerhead sharks, Saw fish and some amazing sea life. In November 23, 2005, Georgia Aquarium officially opened its doors to the public. As the world's largest aquarium, Georgia Aquarium features more animals than any other aquarium in more than eight million gallons of water. Through a path of more than sixty exhibits, the Aquarium tells a global water story, with features modeled after the greatest zoos and aquariums in the world. Each majestic exhibit is designed to inspire.

Chesapeake Bay crabs

Recently Bobby took a trip back East to his old stomping grounds on the Chesapeake Bay and a visit to Schnaitman's Boat Rental and Seafood, crab shack at the end of Wye Landing Lane on the Wye River. The Schnaitman family have been at this location for over 100 years and five generations have worked at the legendary landing. here are some great shots of the family just going about their every day business. Who doesn't love steamed crabs and a cold beer?

Big Yellow Taxi

Why do we like things that look old in such a new technology age? Take "big Yellow Tax i" is a song written and originally performed by Joni Mitchell in 1970 and then later by the Counting Crows.
Same song, but by two different artists and both songs still sound amazing (matter of opinion I guess) . Anything retro we cant seem to get enough of. EBay's biggest sales these days both in the US and the UK is still old stuff bought for interior designers. Here are some images I shot recently of a few thing of days gone by. I just stumbled upon in my travels.

Coffee and a Bit of Shopping

Recently while in Dubai for the Louis Vuitton Trophy on the lay day mid regatta a few of the photographers got together and caught a taxi to one of the oldest markets in Dubai Creek Markets to take a look and maybe buy a few things for friends and family. It can be very easy to miss or drive right past, but it is set on the side of a river that seems to be the hub of local water taxis and merchants selling their wares of silks and linens.
It is the norm to haggle with the store owner over price and how many items you are after, but I am not sure this merchant knew what he was in for when we invaded his shop in force and have him join in with our comedy routine. he was a very friendly guy and knew from the minute we walked in their he was going to make a good sale (possibly the best all week) By the time we had left and done our group portrait it was laughs all around with our newly purchased local head attire and time to explore the river on a local Dow.
The day of my birthday we were lucky to have one of the local reporters Sandra offer to take us all to the Camel Races on the outskirts of Dubai. It did mean that we were all up very early before sunrise to meet with all the vehicles and now a large group to see this pronominal site.
If you ever make it to Dubai it is a must see event because it is not just about watching camels race around a 4 km track in dust and sand, it is about the people that are their and what each one of them does.
None of us knew we were going to participate in the races around the track in a 4x4 wing mirrors millimeters apart and hanging out the sunroof to shoot the camels, the owners and the fans keeping up with the pack as it roars around the track in one big sand storm.
The overwhelming friendliness of everyone out there was just amazing, from the camera operators who televise the race, to the coffee stewards offering hot coffee in gold urns and beautiful china cups.
Dubai was not what i thought it would be and if you are there anytime soon make sure you take the time get out of the city with your friends. It is well worth it.

Art, Culture and Food

I recently went up to Barcelona for four days on the train from Alicante.
Went up with family to have a look around and try out some restaurants and tapas establishments.
We scored an apartment right on the Passeig de Gracia and could walk to so many cool sites and amazing places to eat. It is a major thoroughfare in Barcelona that is lined with shops, restaurants, bars and some of Gaudí's architectural masterpieces.
I have always thought taking roof top bus trips a little cheesy and a very touristy thing to do, but we bit the bullet and jumped on one to see the sights of Barcelona and as it turned out on a fine blue day one of best and quickest ways to see the city. The great thing about these is that you can get on and off as often as you like all over the city and if you like something and want to spend more time there, you can.
Every day was a new adventure to try out a restaurant or little cafe. Whether it be a wine bar to just stop in and taste, to a Michelin star establishment.
If you are passing through Europe any time soon and can spare a few days, I highly recommend a trip to this wonderful city to suck in the Art, Culture and Food it has to offer.

KEEPING IT REAL

While the World Cup is going on right now in South Africa and tourists are pouring in to places like Capetown to watch the matches and spend their tourist dollars, spare a thought for the majority of citizens that live there not ten minutes drive from the city centre in the Townships. Townships were created as living areas for non-whites under the old political system of Apartheid.
Most of Cape Town's townships are concentrated in the area known as the Cape Flats which lie to the East of Table Mountain.
When I was there in 2008 for the Volvo Ocean Race I spent a couple of days out there with the kids and taking them pens and cardboard so they could write on for school. These families I met were so warm and welcomed me and always seemed to have a smile on their face despite what very little they had. I shared a great moment about international rugby with a man that I was introduced in his late seventies that had lived through the horrific apartheid and showed me his identity book that he had to have on him at all times other wise he received a terrible beating.

More than half of Cape Town's population lives in the townships! It's not all palm trees and five star hotels. Township life offers an insight into South African history like no other experience.

In my eyes the beauty of Cape Town extends past Table Mountain and the wealthy suburbs, and into the townships themselves.
If you are visiting Capetown make a very small effort and gets some pens and cardboard and make the trip out of town and meet some beautiful people.

Road Tripin With Bobby G on US Route 395

Bobby has just come back from a spring photo expedition in California on US Route 395.
This time of the year can see some spectacular light with clear blue days.
U.S. Route 395 (US 395) is a 557-mile (896 km) route which traverses from Interstate 15 near the southern city limits of Hesperia, north to the Oregon state line in Modoc County near Goose Lake. The route clips into Nevada, serving the cities Carson City and Reno, before returning to California.
Prior to truncation, US 395 served the metropolitan areas of San Diego and San Bernardino. The highway serves as a connection to the Los Angeles area for the communities of the Owens Valley, Mammoth Mountain and Mono Lake. The highway is used as an access for both the highest point in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney, and the lowest point in North America, Death Valley.
The corridor has been used since the California gold rush, and before numbering was known by several names including El Camino Sierra. This route is part of the California Freeway and Expressway System and is eligible for the Scenic Highway system.

John Muir's longest walk

On my way back from New Zealand I stopped off in Atlanta to stay with a friend and we went on a great hike in the Tallulah Gorge State Park It was one of the best walks I have been on in a long time and it is believed that well know American explorer John Muir walked through here.
On the way home we stumbled upon a very big junk yard full of old school buses and prison buses.
Tallulah Gorge State Park is located on the eastern edge of the Southern Appalachian Mountains in Tallulah Falls, Georgia. The gorge inside the park is approximately two miles long and 1,000 feet deep. When beginning the exploration, one should first visit the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center. The center is setup to educate visitors about historical facts surrounding Tallulah Gorge, and the animals found in the park.
Once outside, take the North Rim Trail to scenic view one. The trail is an easy one, as there are steps which take you down hill. The trail will wind up and then to the left, leading into a spectacular overlook of the gorge and falls.
The view can be overwhelming because the depth of the gorge at this point is 750 feet. Railings are in place to aid in safety, yet one must use caution when locating the waterfall below. Oceana Falls can be seen from here. The gorge encloses a total of six waterfalls.

The trail will eventually turn into a rubber surface when walking towards scenic view two. Amazingly this walking surface is made up of recycled tire rubber.

Once to scenic view two, one can either walk out onto a man made platform or walk down a staircase of 700 steps to a lower portion of the gorge. Either walk will allow a view of Tempesta Falls.
Further on the same trail, one can see scenic views three thru five. Notably scenic view four has the best view of the Tallulah Falls Dam.

Altogether there are ten scenic views which can be accessed by the walking trails. This exploration will take at least two hours to complete, but is well worth the experience.

Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland 2010

I know it has been a while since I have updated the blog, but I have been traveling half way around the world and now finally in my new home in Spain the internet has been turned on and I can upload images.
Auckland, New Zealand was yet another fantastic even with some outstanding sailing. The wind direction basically stayed the same, which allowed sailing almost inside the top part of the harbor. The next event in La Maddalena, Italy is not that far away and looking forward to a lot with the new scenery and turquoise blue water of the Med.

Making Waves at East Cape, New Zealand

I was really looking forward to my surfing break away before I had to start work on the Louis Vuitton Trophy regatta early March. Heading down to the Bay of Pleanty first to stay with friends and pick up my boards and then down through Whakatane. A few days before I arrived in New Zealand there was good size cyclone that had passed through Rarotonga and then down through Tonga. It had produced some awesome surf for almost 9 days on the East coast and every suffer (including myself) I came across seam to be making the most of it and the glorious warm weather.

Powerful winds are ripping off roofs, tearing down trees and power lines and cutting communications with the capital, as Cyclone Rene lashes Tonga.

"We don't know the extent of the damage right now, though there are no reports of serious damage or injuries," the South Pacific nation's National Disaster Office deputy director, Mali'u Takai, said.

Nadi Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre's Alipeti Waqaicelua said the Category Four cyclone was not expected to leave until tomorrow night or early in the morning.

"As far as Tongans are concerned they would not be out of the woods until tomorrow morning," he said.

Earlier the office warned that the cyclone could "increase to very destructive hurricane force."

My thoughts go out to all the Pacific Island and the local people who have to deal with this type of disaster and it is amazing to me that the waves that smashed in to these small islands make their way across the South Pacific for surfers to enjoy in New Zealand.

Back in God's Own Country

Just arrived in my home land of New Zealand with a great flight down on Air New Zealand (Thanks Guys).
I will be working for Louis Vuitton most of March with Bobby G who will be joining me at the end of February. I came down three weeks early to visit family, travel, surf and shoot a bit of this counties outstanding scenery. Not far from the farm where I am staying is a very famous wine area and black sand beaches that stretch for about 50 miles or so. There is a Gannet colony at the near by beach Muriwai and on the cliffs above Maori Bay you can get quite close to them on the look-outs and also look down on to the local surfers.
This place is so stunning and I never get sick of visiting this truly wonderful spot.
looking forward to tasting some of the wine from over 20 vineyards in this area.

Tee Time with Bobby G

A favorite among golf fans is John Daly as he blasts out of the trap on the 2nd hole on the North Course.
Ryuji Imada does a helicopter spin with his driver on the 7th tee.
Brandt Snedeker out of the trap on the 6th hole.
Robert Allenby of Australia coaxes a putt on the 2nd green for a birdie.
Ben Crane is the over all winner and takes home the trophy and $954,000

Bobby G was on the golf course at Torrey Pines Golf Course · La Jolla, Calif to shoot the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Tour.
These are just some of the celebrity golfers that he shot on this job. The total purse for this tournament was $5.3 million.
Shooting golf is so far removed from all the regattas that Bobby shoots each year and being on the water, but he loves this event and the players love him which reflects in all of his images.

Photography that rocks

Photographing Ben Harper at the 2009 Austin City limits music festival last October for a client "Ice Cream Man" had it pros and cons. After working a lot on the water in all sorts of extreme weather conditions I would have never expected so much rain and mud in the state of Texas.
Not only was it a challenge to keep your equipment dry and mud free from the crowds splashing up when they danced, but shooting in the mid day sun all the way through to complete darkness late in the night tested all photographers there. I was so happy to have my Nikon gear and to have changed over from Canon one year before.
Don't think I have ever eaten so much ice cream in all of my life, but it was so good.

Here is some more HDR I shot at the weekend in Savannah, Georgia. This place is amazing even in the gray of the winter months. Savannah is steeped in history and beautiful architecture and I can not get over all the moss that hangs from the huge trees on every street. This place is a photographers dream come true.

Images like this he shot makes him such a great asset to clients when they hire him.
I am sure he has some way of being in contact with the wales because they always turn up when he is around. This is a great image for a calender I think.

In September 2009 I traveled to Newport, RI for the 6 Metre Worlds to shoot the regatta and produce a "coffee table book" on spec. it was a bit of a gamble because no one has pre-bought the book, but the gamble paid off and the international 6 Metre class loved it and it is selling like hot cakes. Think in retrospect that it might have been good to produce a calendar also. The 6 Metre owners and crew are a great bunch of people who I hope to join again sometime soon for another fun event. My thanks goes out to Bill Doyle who helped me with so many things in the regatta and getting the word out about the book and Manda Faye Dunigan who designed the layout.

Congratulations on a wonderful production, as a printer I appreciate the quality of stock used and graphic layout.

How Low Is Too Low In a Chopper?
